eXpertGNU
Similar to
eXpressGNU,
eXpertGNU also provides a simple and intuitive graphical interface
into the world of GNU. Typically, GNU tools (and other command line
tools for that matter) suffer from too many details and complexity of
operation for the end user to remember. The accompanying tools
documentation is usually anemic and cryptic at best (a lot of command
line switches, restrictions, and odd conditions to remember/understand
in order to use the tools effectively). This handicap has limited the
number of active users of GNU tools.
Embedded Software Group, Inc. with its eXpertGNU
product intends to eliminate the need to know any of the
underlying operation details of the GNU tools by
providing the needed functionality via a well-organized,
simple and intuitive graphical interface. To illustrate,
take tar for example, a GNU tool for archiving and
extracting data files similar to WinZip (w/o
compression) has over a 100 command line switches.
Understanding what switches to use, the interaction and
side effect of using various switches is a very
confusing and a non-productive exercise for the user.
The tool is very useful one but maybe cryptic to use.
With eXpertGNU, the underlying functionality is
presented using a standard GUI interface, the tool
output log is collected and stored, errors are caught
and information is presented intelligently to the user
(with suggestions on what to do next), error-recovery
and clean-ups are handled automatically and visual
effects keep the user informed of the tool's progress.
eXpertGNU is a single screen user interface with
various categories of tools supported (compiler and
language tools, file manipulation tools, shell utilities
... etc). Each functional category is self explanatory
and well integrated with other related categories (for
example, file manipulation tools help users renaming
files, change ownership of a files and/or directories,
create or restore from a backup, monitor disk usage,
organize folders, links etc.). |
